Find Jefferson County Court Dates

Start with the court named on your notice, citation, or summons, because the Jefferson County court calendar is really several schedules in one. The Circuit Court branches enter their own settings, and each municipal court keeps a separate list. Public case detail often shows the hearing, the judge, and the branch handling it, but only the clerk or the assigned court can confirm a last-minute change. One caution matters here. A calendar entry is not always a trial date; it may be an initial appearance, a return date, a pretrial, a motion hearing, a status conference, or sentencing. Always check the latest case history before you rely on an older setting.

The Jefferson County Court Calendar

No single county-made calendar covers every court in Jefferson County. Circuit Court dates surface through Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, known as WCCA. They appear whenever they are entered in public case detail and calendar resources. The four Circuit Court branches each keep their own settings. Municipal courts post local instructions or recurring schedules for ordinance and traffic matters.

The caption on your paperwork tells you where to look. Check a Jefferson County Circuit Court case in WCCA and with its assigned branch. A citation from Watertown, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Lake Mills, or Whitewater belongs to that city's court. Waterloo runs no municipal court of its own. Its ordinance and traffic matters land in Jefferson County Circuit Court. Read the court name on the summons, notice, or citation. That alone saves a lot of wrong-office calls.

Latest Jefferson Setting in WCCA

A WCCA case detail screen can list future court dates. They appear right beside the dated case history. Search with the full case number and pick Jefferson County. Working from a name alone? Compare the case type, filed date, branch, and party role before you open a result. A common name can pull up more than one matter.

Never stop at the first future date you see. Later history entries like continued, reset, pass, vacated, notice, or an order changing the date can replace an earlier setting. The Wisconsin Court System's case-search landing page sends Circuit Court matters to WCCA. Appellate matters go to the separate WSCCA system.

Quick check: Match the court, case number, event type, date, time, and branch. Then read every later entry that could move or cancel the event.

How to Find Your Court Date

Use whichever channel fits your Jefferson County court calendar entry. WCCA is the main online route for Circuit Court dates. The public terminal in Room C1080 offers the same system at the courthouse. The clerk's general line can identify your assigned branch. Direct branch staff can confirm the date itself. A municipal clerk handles a city citation. A mailed notice or summons still matters. A party's lawyer can explain the order governing that party.

  1. Read the court name and case number on the latest notice or citation.
  2. For Circuit Court, search WCCA by number and Jefferson County.
  3. Open case detail and identify the latest future setting.
  4. Check later history for a reset, continuance, pass, vacation, or new notice.
  5. Call the assigned branch or municipal clerk if any field conflicts.
  6. Keep the written notice and confirm the room before appearing.

You will find the clerk's counter in Room C1080 at 311 S. Center Ave., Jefferson, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For general questions, call 920-674-7150. The public terminal helps when home access fails. It does not bypass confidential or sealed access rules.

Jefferson Branch Phone Check

The Wisconsin Circuit Court directory lists all four Jefferson County branches. Branch 1, Judge William F. Hue, uses 920-674-7178. Branch 2, Judge William V. Gruber, uses 920-674-7151. Branch 3, Judge Robert F. Dehring Jr., uses 920-674-7210. Branch 4, Judge Bennett J. Brantmeier, uses 920-674-7217. Names and assignments shift over time, so the branch number in current case detail is what routes your call.

Jefferson County's clerk guidance points case questions to the branch where the matter is assigned or where the next hearing is set. No idea which branch that is? Call 920-674-7150 and ask. Staff can confirm calendar facts and court procedure. They cannot give legal advice or promise a judge will grant a schedule change.

Note: Leaving a voicemail does not itself continue a hearing; keep checking until the court confirms a new setting or order.

Reading a Jefferson Court Setting

A setting line packs several fields into one entry. The date and time tell you when the event is planned. The branch or courtroom shows where it belongs. The judge field names the assigned or presiding officer. The setting type explains the purpose, though a short label may still need the branch to confirm it.

DateThe scheduled day, subject to a later reset or order.
TimeThe listed start or calendar-call time; arrive as instructed.
CourtroomThe branch, room, or municipal location tied to the event.
JudgeThe assigned or presiding judge shown by court staff.
Setting typeInitial appearance, return, pretrial, motion, status, trial, sentencing, or another event.
History statusLater entries showing whether the setting remains current.

A displayed setting does not prove the hearing happened. The case history may later show a continuance, a cancellation, a disposition, or a new date, so confirm the branch and room before you travel.

Jefferson Calendar Terms

Local schedules lean on terms that mark distinct steps. Mixing up an initial appearance with a trial can leave you preparing for the wrong event. A small-claims return date is different, too, from the later court trial of a contested claim.

Initial appearance
The first date for a plea, rights, or the next procedural step.
Pretrial conference
A meeting used to discuss issues and possible resolution before trial.
Status or motion hearing
A Circuit Court event concerning case progress or a request for an order.
Continuance or reset
A move from one scheduled date to another.
Trial to the court
A municipal trial decided by the judge, without a jury.

A first-offense OWI municipal case carries a special jury-demand route. Fort Atkinson and state guidance set a ten-day deadline after the initial appearance or plea. The court notice and current municipal instructions control.

Jefferson Calendar Resets and Cancellations

Jefferson County Circuit Court has no one continuance rule. Nothing covers every branch and case type. Call your assigned branch right away. Remember that a request alone changes nothing. Until a judge approves it and sets a new date, the old setting still binds. After any request, check WCCA history for the court's action.

Each city runs its calendar its own way. Fort Atkinson will consider a continuance for demonstrable good cause. Even so, it says more than one is unlikely. Whitewater permits a one-time request by phone, email, or mail before the hearing date. The court then mails a new initial-appearance date. For mandatory-appearance matters, you must contact the clerk directly. In Lake Mills, a written not-guilty plea brings a later pretrial notice.

Keep your contact details current once a written plea is filed. The new date may come by notice instead of appearing on the citation. A late notice does not give you a free pass to skip the original setting.

Jefferson Municipal Calendar Patterns

Municipal court times can point you toward the right calendar, but the citation and the city's current page control. Watertown lets you choose an initial appearance at 10:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m., no matter what time shows on some citations. Its official court calendar connects you to initial appearances, pleas, payments, and pretrial information.

Local courtPublished patternKey point

Lake MillsFirst and third WednesdaysCity/Town court and trials use different weeks.
WhitewaterGenerally every other WednesdayInitial appearances are generally at 2:30 p.m.
WaterlooNo municipal courtCases route to Jefferson County Circuit Court.

Fort Atkinson keeps adult and juvenile dockets separate. Lake Mills usually holds City/Town court the first Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., with trials on the third Wednesday. Patterns like these help route a question, yet they never replace a case-specific notice.

Jefferson Small-Claims Calendar

The Jefferson County Small Claims Division sets most small-claims actions at 10:00 a.m. on most Wednesdays, depending on available dates. Evictions follow tighter limits than other small claims. An eviction return can fall no more than 25 days after the summons issues. Service must happen at least five days before the return. Other small claims may be set up to 30 days after issue. Service then needs to happen at least eight days before return.

A return date is not automatically a trial. If the claim is contested, the case can move to pretrial before a judge or commissioner. From there it can go to a court trial. A plaintiff who fails to appear risks dismissal. A defendant who fails to respond or appear can face judgment once the required default papers are filed. Before assuming the next Wednesday applies, check the latest Jefferson County court calendar entry.

Call the Small Claims Division for an available date before you file. The county describes a common schedule, not an automatic weekly slot.

What If You Miss a Setting

Call your assigned Jefferson County branch or municipal clerk right away. Never assume the matter was dismissed. Ask what the docket now shows. Ask whether an order was entered, and what procedure the court requires. If you have a lawyer, contact that lawyer promptly. For a city case, call the court named on the citation. Do not call the county criminal information line.

Missed a setting? A nonappearance can lead to default judgment, a warrant, bond action, or other case-specific consequences.

Call the court that set the hearing and follow its current instruction. Only the court can confirm the status or grant new relief.

Legal advice about a missed Jefferson County setting should come from a licensed attorney, not court staff.

Some municipal pages describe default judgments and payment periods for nonmandatory citations when nothing is done. Those rules do not reach a mandatory appearance or a Circuit Court case. The event type and the judge's order control.
